Running my own BBS

Post by techguru »

For those who are interested in a BBS system I am currently running one at my QTH. It is running on 144.95, and to my knowledge no one has connected to it yet.

I imagine that is because many people do not use packet BBS's any more but I thought for archival purposes it would be a fun thing to do. And it was.

If you are unfamiliar with a BBS it is essentially a forum much like this, but much more dated.

Originally, BBS systems could be accessed over AX.25 via radio, or through dial-up connections. It’s interesting to think that a sort of “wireless internet” existed over radio well before dial-up became widespread.

Unfortunately, AX.25 has largely fallen out of use today in favour of TCP/IP-based modes, but it’s still a fascinating part of amateur radio history.

Has anyone in this forum used a BBS over packet radio before? If you have I'd love to hear about it.
